[2026 update] What a purity-only report leaves out posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

v.sjobergTL221 Feb 2026#31

Narrowing post #30, because the general version has more than one answer.

Repeat testing: if you want to verify the same lot a second time, testing with a different service strengthens the conclusion. Testing with the same service verifies reproducibility but uses the same method.

It took me longer than it should have to see that.

Adding a small correction to the purity-only summary above rather than a disagreement with it. The substance holds; one of the figures is out by a factor that matters.

What I want from this purity-only thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it.

r.weiss, post #8: Post #7 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit. Since purity-only keeps coming up, it should probably be a maintained page rather than a recurring thread. I am happy to draft it if someone with more direct experience will review it. Go to post

Post #32 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

A record with four results over sixteen months is a thin record rather than a bad one, and the honest description says which.

Filing this under things that are true until someone shows me otherwise.

Understood, and I withdraw the assumption I opened with.

Purity-only: I have looked for the primary source twice and failed twice. Either it does not exist or it is somewhere I do not know to look, and I would like to know which.

Nicolaides, post #5: On purity-only I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated. Go to post

This follows post #34 rather than contradicting it.

Careful with the language on purity-only. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

taper_shift, post #13: My experience of purity-only contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that. Go to post

Worth separating two things that post #36 runs together.

It does not extend to lots nobody has seen, it is not a recommendation, and it says nothing about anything other than what was measured.

One of those cases where knowing the mechanism does not help the decision.

a.eriksen, post #30: The honest answer on purity-only is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter. Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth. Go to post

Purity-only was covered in the wiki last year and the page has a review date on it, which is a better starting point than my memory of a thread.

Post #36 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

The number people quote for purity-only is a central estimate presented without its interval, and the interval is wide enough that the estimate is nearly uninformative on its own.

Everything in post #37 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

The record shows what was measured. Everything beyond that is inference and this site tries to keep the line visible.

Practical note on purity-only: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow.

That is a fair summary of where the discussion has got to.

Adding a source would improve this post and I do not have one to hand.

Speaking only to purity-only as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

It is worth stating the boring hypothesis before the interesting one.

Source for the purity-only figure, since it was asked for. It is in the discussion rather than the abstract, which is why the version circulating is stronger than the paper is.

Reading the surrounding paragraph is worth the two minutes. The authors are more careful than their summarisers.

I changed my mind about purity-only after someone here asked me for the source and I could not produce one. That is worth saying out loud because it is the ordinary way it happens.

b.fonseca, post #19: Small correction to my own earlier position on purity-only. I had the units the wrong way round, which changes the conclusion by an order of magnitude and therefore changes it entirely. Go to post

Repeat determination on the same product line months apart is the measurement that speaks to consistency, and consistency is what most buyers actually want.

This has been discussed before and I could not find the thread, so, again.

Summarising the purity-only thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Coming back to post #50, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

The most useful reply I ever got about purity-only was a request to state my units. It sounds like pedantry and it has saved me twice.

Reporting rather than recommending, on purity-only. What happened is above. Whether it should have is a different question and not one I am qualified to answer.

HHidalgo, post #23: Where the purity-only discussion usually stalls is that nobody wants to say "I do not know" and everyone is willing to say "it varies". Those are the same sentence with different clothes on. Go to post

Checked the purity-only claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

Picking up post #56: that is the part I would want checked first.

I read the earlier replies on purity-only twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

On post #54 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Purity-only came up in a thread eighteen months ago and was answered well. I cannot find it, which is itself the problem, so here is the reconstruction.

Practical answer on purity-only, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.
