Titles that describe the question, not the situation — what changed since posts 31–34

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

c.tulloch, post #29: Seconded. It reads as careful rather than confident, which is the right register. Go to post

A question about somebody else's post should be a reply to that post, not a new topic. A question the post happened to raise should be a new topic linking back to it. The difference is whether the answer is useful without the original.

A weak preference rather than a position.

If the answer you got does not fit your case, say which part does not fit rather than restating the question. Otherwise the next reply is the same as the last one.

Coming back to post #31, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Two people in this thread mean different things by Titles and are disagreeing about the definition while believing they are disagreeing about the facts. Worth pausing to define it.

Post #31 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Chromatogram questions: describe the method first. Column type, gradient, wavelength, detection method. Everything else follows from method. A chromatogram without method is a number without context.
