[2026 update] Currency conversion and the cost you did not see

Solved
Solved by vial_table in post #5
The arithmetic in post #4 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check. For anyone finding this later: the short answer on Currency conversion is that it depends on one thing, and the rest of the thread is people identifying which thing.

Posting this under the heading it deserves: Currency conversion and the cost you did not see Everything below is what sits behind that.

Currency and fees, set out so that the comparison can be checked.

Quoted amount, conversion rate applied, the spread on top of the mid-market rate, and any fixed fee: four numbers, and only the first is ever quoted. On my last two orders the difference between the quoted figure and the amount that left the account was not trivial.

Am I setting this comparison up correctly, or is there a component everyone else already accounts for?

The opening post describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

I would be cautious about generalising from the Currency conversion example above. It is a good example. It is one example.

No payment facilitation: this site does not handle payments and does not connect buyers and sellers for the purpose of payment. We discuss logistics and documentation of the process but not the commerce itself.

Two sentences on Currency conversion and then I will stop, because the rest is speculation and the thread is better without mine.

What is documented is narrow. What is inferred from it is broad. The gap between them is where every argument here lives.

This is the first time the answer has come with its own limits attached. Appreciated.

Confirming the total before paying rather than after is obvious and is skipped constantly, particularly where shipping is added late.

Currency conversion is one of those subjects where the general answer and the answer for a specific case diverge, and the thread will go in circles until someone says which one is being asked for.

Currency conversion and fees are frequently the difference between two quotes that look identical. Compare the landed total.

The site does not carry prices, payment details or transaction routes, and questions asking for them will be answered with that rather than with a link.

Answering the question post #9 raises rather than the one it answers.

The number people quote for Currency conversion is a central estimate presented without its interval, and the interval is wide enough that the estimate is nearly uninformative on its own.

Refund policy before ordering: ask what the policy is if you receive damaged material or if the order is incorrect. Get it in writing or screenshot it.

Post #13 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Reading this Currency conversion thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

A definition problem is doing most of the work in this Currency conversion discussion. Once the term is pinned down I suspect the disagreement mostly goes away and what is left is small.

Order confirmations that state the lot to be shipped are rare and are the single most useful thing a supplier can put on one.

Post #13 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Filing a mild objection to the consensus on Currency conversion. Mild because I might be wrong; an objection because nobody has addressed the case that does not fit.

Building on post #17 rather than restating it.

What I would check first on Currency conversion is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

Currency conversion is a good example of a question where the honest answer is boring and the interesting answers are unsupported. I would go with boring.

What I want from this Currency conversion thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it.

I read post #20 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Recording the time from payment to dispatch is worth doing, because it is the part of the process most within the supplier's control.

Worth one more sentence than it usually gets.

Taking post #22 at face value and following it one step further.

Escrow services: some third-party services hold payment until the buyer confirms receipt. They add cost but reduce risk if the supplier is unknown.

Partial shipment with the balance to follow should be agreed in advance rather than discovered on arrival. Where it is agreed, it is unremarkable.

Post #22 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

One caution on Currency conversion: everything above assumes the underlying documentation is what it claims to be. That assumption is doing real work and is rarely stated.

Coming back to post #24, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Ask what happens if the material fails independent testing before you order, not afterwards. The answer is informative and costs one email.

Adding a small correction to the Currency conversion summary above rather than a disagreement with it. The substance holds; one of the figures is out by a factor that matters.
