A history of disordered eating: proceeding carefully posts 61–76

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

I have been on both sides of the history of disordered eating argument in this category within eighteen months, which should tell you how strong the evidence for either side is.

Support and community: some people process weight change through community (online or in-person). Others prefer privacy. Knowing what you need and seeking it proactively helps.

I have written this out at length because the short version keeps being misread.

lc_gradient, post #40: On post #38 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification. The reason history of disordered eating keeps being re-asked is that the answer is conditional and people quote it without the condition. It is not that the answer is unknown. Go to post

History of disordered eating is a good example of a question where the honest answer is boring and the interesting answers are unsupported. I would go with boring.

Sensible. I would want the same detail before I acted on it either.

Coming back to post #61, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Disordered eating history: a history of anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders changes the risk-benefit calculation. Appetite suppression might trigger relapse. Specialist input is prudent.

What I want from this history of disordered eating thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it.

KAndersson, post #36: My experience of history of disordered eating contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that. Go to post

The practical version of history of disordered eating is three sentences long. The rigorous version is three pages and reaches the same conclusion with the conditions attached.

Where a member is finding this hard, the useful reply is usually a question rather than an answer, and this subcategory does that well.

On balance I think that is right, and I would not bet much on it.

Filing a mild objection to the consensus on history of disordered eating. Mild because I might be wrong; an objection because nobody has addressed the case that does not fit.

Reading this history of disordered eating thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

Nothing here is medical advice and several members in this subcategory say plainly that they are describing their own experience only.

Scoping that to what I have actually seen rather than what I have read.

Picking up post #71: that is the part I would want checked first.

I think the history of disordered eating question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

On post #70 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

The social side of this — how other people respond to visible change — comes up constantly and has nothing to do with pharmacology.

It reads as pedantry until the day it does not.

On history of disordered eating I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

j.sandvik, post #49: Post #48 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one. Practical answer on history of disordered eating, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not. Go to post

Where I part company with post #74, and it is a narrow parting.

History of disordered eating would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.
