How the vendor documentation pages are maintained, and by whom — what changed since

I would call the community position on vendor documentation pages likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Asking directly, because I could not find a straight answer: How the vendor documentation pages are maintained, and by whom — what changed since

What changes if the standard account of vendor documentation pages is wrong? I ask because I have been treating it as settled and I noticed this week that I could not say why.

Working through the consequences rather than the evidence, since others here are better placed on the evidence.

Coming back to the opening post, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Since vendor documentation pages keeps coming up, it should probably be a maintained page rather than a recurring thread. I am happy to draft it if someone with more direct experience will review it.

Dosing and purity: a vial that is 99% pure might contain 80% of its label claim if the other mass is water, counter-ion, and excipient. Purity and content are different. Both matter for different reasons.

Marking that as an opinion rather than a finding.

Counterpoint on vendor documentation pages, offered without confidence: the same observation is consistent with a much duller explanation, and nobody has ruled the dull one out.

Useful. I had the fact and not the reason, which turns out to be the important half.

Picking up post #6: that is the part I would want checked first.

The cost of a submission is worth stating. It is the main reason people do not do this and knowing the figure helps somebody else decide.

The confident version of this sentence would be wrong, so here is the hedged one.

Testing service selection: Janoshik gives purity with chromatogram. Medutest gives combined purity and identity. PeptideMeter gives verification records as well as results. VendorInvestigate reviews documentation. They answer different questions.

I would be glad to be shown a cleaner way of putting this.

Photograph the vial and the label before opening. It costs ten seconds and it is what turns a report into something checkable.

That is the version I use. It may not be the version that is correct.

Genuine question rather than a rhetorical one: has anyone here actually observed vendor documentation pages, as opposed to read about it? The thread is long and I cannot tell.

Noted, and I have changed what I was going to do on the strength of it.

I read the earlier replies on vendor documentation pages twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

Post #12 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Do not adjust a reported figure. Post what the laboratory said and put your interpretation in a separate sentence.

That is one dataset and I would not build a rule on it.

Building on post #12 rather than restating it.

Multiple services on one lot: agreement across two independent laboratories is stronger than a high number from one. Our vendor pages deliberately mix services for that reason.

The answer changed when I changed how I was measuring, which was informative.

Reporting rather than recommending, on vendor documentation pages. What happened is above. Whether it should have is a different question and not one I am qualified to answer.

Narrowing post #15, because the general version has more than one answer.

Reports of ordinary results are more valuable than reports of remarkable ones, precisely because only the remarkable ones get posted elsewhere.

Worth reading the earlier posts in this thread before acting on mine.

Post #15 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Where you have no independent result, a documentation report is still worth filing: what the certificate contained, what it omitted, and how fast a request was answered.

A single observation, in a thread that deserves better than single observations.

The most useful reply I ever got about vendor documentation pages was a request to state my units. It sounds like pedantry and it has saved me twice.

On post #15 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Take the reasoning and check the arithmetic; I do not always get it right.

Sensible. I would want the same detail before I acted on it either.

I would put moderate confidence on the mainstream reading of vendor documentation pages and no more. That is not scepticism for its own sake; it is where the sourcing actually stops.

Worth separating vendor documentation pages as a question about the compound from vendor documentation pages as a question about the documentation. They get answered by different people and only one of them is answerable here.

I read post #22 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

My experience of vendor documentation pages contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that.

On vendor documentation pages: the maintained page in the documentation commons covers the general case with citations and a review date, which is more reliable than any reply here including this one.

Post #28 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

I keep a log for vendor documentation pages specifically because my memory of it turned out to be systematically wrong in one direction. Six weeks of notes cost nothing and settled it.
