Topic summary

Lurking for two months before posting: was that the right call?

This is a generated summary. It shows the 9 most-liked posts from a topic of 72, in their original order, with the accepted answer included where one exists. It is a reading aid and it will miss nuance — the full topic is the record.

First week here. The thing I would tell someone arriving behind me is that the answers are slower and much better than anywhere else I have looked, and that trying to hurry one does not work.

That has held every time I have looked, which is not the same as always.

v.salgado, post #4: Nothing here requires expertise. The experienced members here got that way by posting questions, not by knowing the answer before they showed up. If you know something useful, post it. If you do not, ask. Go to post

The compound and evidence pages are updated regularly and they are worth reading when you are new. They answer the meta questions like "do we have data on this" and "what do the trials actually show" before you ask them.

The Lounge is a real category rather than a dumping ground. The sourcing rule still applies there, which surprises people, but the register is looser and nobody minds a digression.

Adding it because I spent an afternoon working it out and nobody should have to twice.

ppm_error, post #9: Reading the guidelines before you post is genuinely worth the twenty minutes. Not because you will break one, but because the rules explain why the place reads the way it does. Go to post

Trust levels accumulate over time and they give you access to small things like the ability to edit your own posts without a timestamp. They are not a status symbol and they do not make you more right. Someone at trust level zero with a good question gets better answers than someone at trust level four with a bad one.

Someone will know this better than I do and I hope they say so.

I would treat that as a working assumption and revisit it.

Take it as a starting point and not as a specification.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.

That is a fair summary of where the discussion has got to.
