Second pass at: A single out-of-range value on an otherwise normal panel

Second pass at: A single out-of-range value on an otherwise normal panel Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

General question, not a request for advice about my own care — I know the difference and I would rather be told to see my prescriber than get an answer that pretends otherwise.

I have a panel in front of me with one value outside the reference interval and everything else within it. My instinct is that a single out-of-range result on a single draw is close to uninformative, and I would like to understand how the people who read these professionally think about that.

What I am actually asking is how to tell an interesting result from an uninteresting one before booking an appointment about it.

This follows the opening post rather than contradicting it.

Single out-of-range value looks different depending on whether you are reading the primary literature or the summaries of it, and the difference is not in our favour.

Grateful for the specificity. Vague answers to this question are what sent me looking.

General information rather than advice about anyone's care. A single value outside a reference interval, on a single draw, in an otherwise unremarkable panel, is usually uninformative.

I have said this before in a thread nobody could find, so it is worth repeating.

Where a panel includes a calculated value, that value inherits the imprecision of everything it was calculated from and is usually reported without an interval.

I would want to see it done twice before believing it once.

Picking up post #5: that is the part I would want checked first.

Lipid changes during substantial weight loss are expected and their trajectory is not always monotonic. A single mid-course panel can be misleading.

Reading it back, the second half matters more than the first.

Single out-of-range value sits at the boundary between what this community can usefully discuss and what it cannot, and I think it falls on the discussable side, narrowly.

Trying to state the single out-of-range value position in a way that someone who disagrees would recognise as fair, because I do not think the version in this thread passes that test.

Nothing in this subcategory is medical advice, and a panel with an unexpected result is precisely the situation where that matters.

Keeping your own results in a single table with dates is more useful than any individual result in it, and almost nobody starts early enough.

Two sources, same conclusion, and I could not rule out that one copied the other.

A single value outside interval: usually uninformative on a single draw. What makes a result interesting: a trend across multiple draws, a magnitude well beyond the interval, a pattern that coheres with other values, or symptoms that fit.

Sensible. I would want the same detail before I acted on it either.

I had written a reply contradicting post #11 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Agreed on single out-of-range value, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.
