Sleep apnoea improving and the equipment implications

CC
c.castellanosTL222 May 2026#1

Sleep apnoea improving and the equipment implications Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

A sleep question with what I actually recorded rather than how I feel about it.

Bedtime and rise time to the nearest quarter hour, 54 consecutive nights, plus a single 0-4 score for how the following morning went. The device numbers I have kept separately, because I do not trust them and I did not want them contaminating the diary.

The pattern I am asking about is in the middle of the series and I cannot decide whether it is real or an artefact of a change in when I recorded.

That is the distinction I keep failing to hold on to. Written down now.

Answering the question the opening post raises rather than the one it answers.

Gastrointestinal effects overnight: nausea or reflux or constipation at night can disrupt sleep. Dosing timing (morning versus evening) might help if nighttime GI symptoms are the problem.

Sleep quality versus quantity: some people report changes to sleep duration; others report changes to sleep quality without duration change. Both can matter for recovery and daytime function.

If this contradicts something upthread, the upthread version may well be the better one.

Sleep hygiene: basics (cool dark room, consistent sleep time, no screens before bed) matter more during energy deficit because stress and sleep need are higher.

The strength of my opinion here exceeds the strength of my evidence.

Stimulants and sleep: if supplementing with caffeine or other stimulants for energy during weight loss, timing and dose matter for sleep. Evening stimulant use interferes with sleep.

If that is already documented somewhere, ignore me and link it.

Everything in post #5 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Energy and sleep needs: rapid weight loss increases real metabolic stress. Sleep needs might increase even though appetite for food has decreased. Prioritising sleep is prudent during active weight loss.

Narrowing post #5, because the general version has more than one answer.

Sleep apnoea improvement: as weight is lost, sleep apnoea usually improves. The timeframe is weeks to months, not immediate. Improvement often is gradual rather than sudden.

Quietly grateful for the plain phrasing. Not every thread gets that.

Taking post #8 at face value and following it one step further.

Energy availability affects sleep in both directions, and a large deficit can produce either fragmentation or unusual sleepiness.

The disagreement above is smaller than it looks once the terms are fixed.

The published data on sleep outcomes in this class is thinner than the volume of discussion, which is worth saying plainly.

A referral for a proper sleep study answers in one night what months of forum discussion cannot.

I would treat the number as indicative rather than as a measurement.

Adding the measurement that post #10 says would settle it.

Fatigue during the day and poor sleep at night are different problems with different causes and get merged in most accounts here.

I have deliberately not rounded that, because the rounding is where the argument starts.

Helpful, and short, which on this subject is harder than long.

Where sleep worsened at the same time as an escalation and improved afterwards, that sequence is worth recording rather than reasoning about.

The general answer and the answer for your case may diverge here.

Consistency of timing does more for most people's sleep than any intervention discussed in this subcategory.

I have no interest in any supplier named above.

Picking up post #15: that is the part I would want checked first.

Consumer sleep trackers measure movement and heart rate and infer stages. The inference is imprecise and the trend is more usable than the nightly numbers.

Caffeine and alcohol both affect sleep architecture and both change during a period of reduced intake without anybody deciding to change them.

Agreed on all of that, and I have nothing to add to it.
