Transporting a vial for a weekend away — a second dataset Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

Posting a small dataset on Transporting a vial. It is mine, it is uncontrolled, and the method is stated so it can be discounted appropriately.

What I would like is not agreement but a second dataset collected by someone with no stake in mine. If one exists I would rather read it than argue for this one.

Temperature excursions: if a vial sat at room temperature for a time, the question is whether the excursion was long enough to cause damage. Hours at room temperature is usually low risk. Days to weeks raises the risk. If you are unsure, contacting the supplier is more informative than guessing.

Where I would look next, rather than where I would stop.

The opening post put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

An update on my earlier Transporting a vial post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Building on the opening post rather than restating it.

Transporting a vial sits at the boundary between what this community can usefully discuss and what it cannot, and I think it falls on the discussable side, narrowly.

Everything in the opening post holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Visible particulate is a strong signal in the other direction: it is a reason to stop and ask rather than to filter and proceed.

Vial integrity: once a vial is entered with a needle repeatedly, the rubber closure degrades and the integrity fails. Using the same vial repeatedly over weeks or months carries increasing risk of contamination. Single-use vials entered once are lowest risk.

It is the kind of thing that is obvious once and never again.

What I would tell a new member reading about Transporting a vial for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

On post #5 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

I think the Transporting a vial question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

I read post #8 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Transporting a vial is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Clarity is a weak test. A solution can lose a significant fraction of its active content to degradation or adsorption while remaining perfectly clear.

The answer changed when I changed how I was measuring, which was informative.

Narrowing post #14, because the general version has more than one answer.

The thing about Transporting a vial that took me longest to accept is that a plausible mechanism is not evidence of an effect. It is a reason to look, not a result.

Careful with the language on Transporting a vial. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

Two questions I would want answered before drawing anything from the Transporting a vial data above: how were the cases selected, and what happened to the ones that dropped out.

Container choice matters: the material of the vial, the rubber closure, the fill volume all affect how quickly the contents degrade. Smaller fill volumes lose less to adsorption. Glass vials lose less to leaching than plastics.

Worth one more sentence than it usually gets.

Transporting a vial would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.

Dating prepared solutions: write the date reconstitution on the vial in permanent marker. If you later need to know whether it has been sitting for weeks or days, the date tells you. Guessing on this is where errors accumulate.

Adding a source would improve this post and I do not have one to hand.

Light protection is easy and cheap. The original carton exists for a reason and a vial stored in it is protected without anybody having to think about it again.
