Constipation management: what I expected, what I found, and the gap between them.
I am posting the gap rather than a theory about it. My theories about gaps like this one have not held up well.
I had written a reply contradicting the opening post and deleted it. Here is what survived.
Recognition and grading: nausea ranges from "noticeable" to "limiting". Constipation ranges from mild to severe. Having language to describe the magnitude helps you track whether something is worsening or stable and helps your clinician understand what you are reporting.
That is all I can say without guessing.
Confirming post #3 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.
One more thing on Constipation management that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.
I would call the community position on Constipation management likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.
Staff rationale: Hidden by community flags. Contained an unredacted laboratory report with identifiers visible (R12). The analytical content has been quoted back into the topic without them.
The arithmetic in post #3 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.
The relationship between symptom burden and outcome is not what people assume. Feeling worse is not evidence of a larger effect and feeling nothing is not evidence of an inactive preparation.
The step people skip is the one I have spelled out.

Where I part company with post #3, and it is a narrow parting.
The failure mode on Constipation management is boring rather than dramatic. It is almost always the step everyone assumes was done correctly because it is too simple to get wrong.
I had read the opposite somewhere and cannot now find where, which tells me something.
Constipation is reported at least as often as nausea and is discussed a fraction as much. Fluid, fibre and movement are the boring answers and they are the ones that work.
