A fridge failure and how I assessed the contents afterwards Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

The question about fridge failure that I actually want answered is the second one below. The first is context and I have kept it short.

Both are stated with units, and I have said what I already checked so that nobody repeats it.

Fridge failure is one of those subjects where the general answer and the answer for a specific case diverge, and the thread will go in circles until someone says which one is being asked for.

Practical note on fridge failure: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow.

Post #9 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

The number people quote for fridge failure is a central estimate presented without its interval, and the interval is wide enough that the estimate is nearly uninformative on its own.

BBramley, post #9: Reading this fridge failure thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not. Go to post

Where I have landed on fridge failure, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.
