Micronutrient adequacy at low total intake posts 91–100

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Picking up post #90: that is the part I would want checked first.

Fibre: adequate fibre intake supports fullness and gut motility, both of which matter during the gastrointestinal effects of these compounds. High fibre on top of appetite suppression requires attention to hydration and gradual introduction.

Scoping that to what I have actually seen rather than what I have read.

dr.villanueva, post #22: Eating anything at all: on substantial appetite suppression, eating enough total calories to maintain lean mass is the priority. Protein comes second to total intake. The general answer and the answer for your case may diverge here. Go to post

Liquid sources are tolerated better than solid ones by many people here, and that is a practical observation rather than a nutritional principle.

That is the practical version. The rigorous version is longer and says the same thing.

Fibre and fluid tend to fall alongside protein when intake drops, and the constipation reported here follows from that as much as from the mechanism.

I would hold that lightly until someone with a larger sample weighs in.

Adding a reference point for micronutrient adequacy. Mine is a single case, collected without controls, and I am posting the method alongside it so it can be discounted appropriately.

The failure mode on micronutrient adequacy is boring rather than dramatic. It is almost always the step everyone assumes was done correctly because it is too simple to get wrong.

n.kaufmann, post #64: Distribution across the day appears to matter less than total for most outcomes, and it matters practically because a single large meal is harder when appetite is reduced. Posting it because the silence on this was starting to look like agreement. Go to post

Protein supplements: whey, casein, and plant-based protein powders can help hit targets when whole-food intake is limited by appetite. Protein quality (all essential amino acids) matters more than form.

I read post #94 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Tracking intake for a week rather than permanently is usually enough to find out whether there is a problem. Permanent tracking has its own costs.

The version of micronutrient adequacy that circulates here is a simplification of a simplification. It is not wrong, but it has lost the conditions under which it holds, and those conditions are where the interesting cases live.

Self-reported intake is optimistic by a consistent margin in the published comparisons, which is worth applying to your own numbers.
