Private prescribing in the UK: what is actually involved posts 61–77

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

a.vermeulen, post #32: Post #29 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition. Private prescribing: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this. Go to post

Building on post #60 rather than restating it.

Agreed on private prescribing, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Correcting an out-of-date claim in this subcategory with a source and a date is more valuable than a new topic on the same question.

If anyone can point at the primary source I would be grateful.

Private prescribing arrangements differ in what they include, and the differences are more consequential than the headline price.

micrograms, post #13: This is the first time the answer has come with its own limits attached. Appreciated. Go to post

Everything in post #62 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

If someone has run private prescribing properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet.

Occupational health screening: some UK occupations require medical checks. Disclosure of weight-loss medication might be relevant to employment screening; understand your obligations.

Correct me on the arithmetic if it is wrong; I would rather know.

BDraganov, post #6: Private prescribing is a good example of a question where the honest answer is boring and the interesting answers are unsupported. I would go with boring. Go to post

Post #64 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Reading back through the private prescribing threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

I read post #67 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

MHRA is the regulator. Licensed incretin analogues are prescription-only medicines. NHS and private prescribing routes exist with materially different access criteria and costs.

Adding it because I spent an afternoon working it out and nobody should have to twice.

b.adeyemi, post #51: I would rather this thread reach "we do not know" about private prescribing than reach a confident answer that nobody can support when asked. Go to post

Since private prescribing keeps coming up, it should probably be a maintained page rather than a recurring thread. I am happy to draft it if someone with more direct experience will review it.

I had written a reply contradicting post #67 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

The most useful reply I ever got about private prescribing was a request to state my units. It sounds like pedantry and it has saved me twice.

a.delgado, post #28: Availability through a private route and availability through the public system are separate questions and both change independently. Go to post

I had written a reply contradicting post #69 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Importing for personal use: importing a prescription-only medicine without a prescription is not lawful. Material sold as research-use-only is not a licensed medicine regardless of content.

Confirming post #69 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

The most useful thing anyone has posted about private prescribing in this category was a table of what had been measured and by whom. That is what I would want again.

On private prescribing, the part that usually goes wrong is that the question is asked as though it has one answer. It has a range, and the width of the range is the interesting bit.

If you can post the two or three numbers you are working from, several people here will check the arithmetic rather than argue about the conclusion.

Nothing in this subcategory is medical or legal advice, and prescribers reading here consistently say so themselves.

I am describing what is, rather than arguing for what should be.

p.novak, post #38: Private prescribing is legal and widespread, including through remote consultation. Pharmacies must satisfy themselves that a prescription is clinically appropriate. Expect to be asked for measurements and history. Go to post

Coming back to post #73, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

I changed my mind about private prescribing after someone here asked me for the source and I could not produce one. That is worth saying out loud because it is the ordinary way it happens.

Two claims get bundled together under private prescribing and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

Saving this. It is the version I will quote when the question comes round again.
