Programming during a large energy deficit

This is a generated summary. It shows the 7 most-liked posts from a topic of 50, in their original order, with the accepted answer included where one exists. It is a reading aid and it will miss nuance — the full topic is the record.

a.batista, post #2: A note on how programming during a large energy gets discussed rather than on programming during a large energy itself: the confident posts get the replies and the careful ones get ignored, and the careful ones have been right more often. Go to post

Same experience here, different supplier, so it is at least not unique to one of them.

r.aldana_pharmd, post #6: Adaptation and plateau: if strength does not change for weeks, that is stability, not backsliding. Expecting continuous progress during weight loss is unrealistic. Go to post

The arithmetic on programming during a large energy is the easy part and it is where the errors are, which is an uncomfortable combination. Show your working and someone will catch it.

Adding a data point of agreement rather than a data point.

t.duarte, post #14: Noted, and thank you for writing it out rather than summarising it. Go to post

Maintaining load with reduced volume is a reasonable strategy during a deficit and appears in the published literature more than the reverse.

e.ferreira, post #11: Building on post #8 rather than restating it. Speaking only to programming during a large energy as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect. Go to post

Post #20 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Recovery capacity falls with energy availability, so a programme that worked at maintenance may be too much during a large deficit.

b.kowalski, post #25: Maintenance is the goal: preserving lean mass and strength during weight loss is the goal of resistance training in this context, not building new muscle. That goal is usually achievable with consistent, moderate training. Go to post

Picking up post #34: that is the part I would want checked first.

Machine-based work is often better tolerated when energy is low and is not inferior for this purpose.

I would put this at better than even and not much better.

A resistance stimulus during a deficit is the other half of the lean-tissue argument, and the evidence for it is reasonably strong.
