Protein density versus volume when you cannot eat much posts 91–106

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Coming back to post #88, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Protein targets during weight loss: the standard recommendation is 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight. Individual requirements vary but that range is a reasonable starting point.

Liquid versus solid: protein in liquid form (shakes) is easier to consume in volume but might not be as satiating as solid food. Using both together can help.

a.iyer, post #36: Post #34 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition. I would be cautious about generalising from the protein density versus volume example above. It is a good example. It is one example. Go to post

Temperature and texture change what is tolerable for a lot of people during the first weeks, and that is worth experimenting with before concluding nothing works.

The practical problem is that appetite suppression makes hitting a target genuinely hard, and "eat more protein" ignores the actual constraint.

Reading it again, the caveat matters more than the finding.

I read post #91 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

A methods point on protein density versus volume rather than a substantive one: if the comparison is not like for like, the difference you are measuring is the difference in method.

a.amankwah, post #59: Where I part company with post #55, and it is a narrow parting. Temperature and texture change what is tolerable for a lot of people during the first weeks, and that is worth experimenting with before concluding nothing works. Adding it in case it saves somebody the afternoon it cost me. Go to post

That is the distinction I keep failing to hold on to. Written down now.

Marking my uncertainty on protein density versus volume explicitly. I am confident about the direction, much less confident about the size, and not confident at all that it generalises past the case in the first post.

What tends to work is front-loading the day, prioritising density over volume, and treating it as a solvable problem rather than an inconvenience.

For what it is worth, the same held on the two occasions I checked.

a.petrov, post #51: Published guidance on protein during weight loss is reasonably consistent and is easy to find, which makes this one of the better-evidenced practical questions here. Go to post

Narrowing post #99, because the general version has more than one answer.

I would put moderate confidence on the mainstream reading of protein density versus volume and no more. That is not scepticism for its own sake; it is where the sourcing actually stops.

Answering the question post #99 raises rather than the one it answers.

Where intake has fallen a long way, protein is usually the first thing to fall because it is the least appealing macronutrient when appetite is reduced.

Protein sources: animal sources (meat, fish, eggs, dairy) are denser and easier to hit targets with. Plant sources require higher volume. Neither is nutritionally superior; volume and personal preference matter.

Protein density versus volume would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.

Protein supplements: whey, casein, and plant-based protein powders can help hit targets when whole-food intake is limited by appetite. Protein quality (all essential amino acids) matters more than form.

It is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect and was not at the time.

Post #103 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Leucine and MPS: leucine stimulates muscle protein synthesis at a threshold of roughly 2 to 3 grams per meal. That influences how much protein per meal matters, but total daily protein still matters most.

If it helps: the failure mode here is usually boring rather than dramatic.

m.kjaer, post #19: On post #15 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification. Meeting protein targets on suppressed appetite: this is where the practical difficulty lies. Eating more protein when appetite is suppressed is genuinely hard. Front-loading the day, prioritising density over volume, and accepting this is a problem worth solving all help. Go to post

Adding the measurement that post #103 says would settle it.

Adding a null result on protein density versus volume. I looked, carefully, and found nothing, and null results deserve posting precisely because they never are.

Moved from Resistance training by s.leclerc. Category placement is not obvious from outside and getting it wrong is expected. This topic will get better answers here. The move is recorded in the public log citing R7.
