Research-use-only status: what it means legally and practically

Research-use-only status: what it means legally and practically Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

Asking about research-use-only status directly, because I have read four threads on it and each answered a slightly different question.

The version I want answered is the narrow one: given the method stated below, is the result within what anyone else has seen? I am not asking what it means yet.

Method, numbers and the two assumptions I am aware of making are below. If the assumptions are wrong that is more useful to me than agreement.

Adding the measurement that the opening post says would settle it.

Thymosin alpha-1 has a regulatory history in several jurisdictions and a real clinical literature, which puts it in a different evidential category from most of its neighbours here.

Offering a way to settle research-use-only status rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to research-use-only status: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

On analysis: unusual or modified sequences are exactly where a default reversed-phase method is least likely to be appropriate. A supplier that runs everything on one gradient will produce a flattering result for something.

The claim is narrower than it sounds, and deliberately so.

Second-hand on research-use-only status, so weight it accordingly — someone whose method I trust told me this and I have not verified it myself.

Post #5 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Something worth flagging about research-use-only status: the strongest-sounding claims in this thread are the ones with no source attached, which is the usual pattern and not a coincidence.

Everything in post #5 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Checked the research-use-only status claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

Right, and stated more narrowly than I would have dared to state it.

Research-use-only status is a legal classification, not a safety classification. It means the compound is sold for laboratory use and not for human consumption or treatment. The label does not tell you whether the molecule is safe, efficacious, or what its effects are.

If the premise is wrong, everything after it is decoration.

Posting my research-use-only status numbers with the method attached so they can be discounted properly. Uncontrolled, unblinded, and collected by someone who wanted a particular answer.

Picking up post #11: that is the part I would want checked first.

Research-use-only status: I have looked for the primary source twice and failed twice. Either it does not exist or it is somewhere I do not know to look, and I would like to know which.

On research-use-only status the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that.

This follows post #16 rather than contradicting it.

A compound with no established assay is a compound where a certificate can say almost anything. That is not an accusation about anyone; it is a statement about what a document can carry.

The general case is well covered; this is the awkward specific one.

I would keep research-use-only status and the decision it usually gets used for separate in this thread. They are related and they are not the same question, and merging them is why the last one went badly.

On research-use-only status, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

Answering the question post #17 raises rather than the one it answers.

My experience of research-use-only status contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that.

Reading back through the research-use-only status threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

Melanocortin agonists: mechanism involves the melanocortin-4 receptor pathway that regulates appetite. The documented adverse profile includes blood pressure elevation and erections of sustained duration, the second of which is specific enough that it is the first thing worth mentioning.

The reason research-use-only status keeps being re-asked is that the answer is conditional and people quote it without the condition. It is not that the answer is unknown.

Narrowing post #25, because the general version has more than one answer.

Research-use-only status is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Post #25 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Taking research-use-only status seriously for a moment rather than deflecting: the honest position is that the community has observations and no controlled comparison, and those two things support very different sentences.

Agreed on research-use-only status, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Several compounds discussed here have no published human pharmacokinetics at all. That means half-life claims in circulation were derived from an animal model or from nothing.
