On the subject in the title: Submitting a sample: the process end to end Working notes rather than a conclusion.

Submitting a sample keeps being re-asked here and I think that is because the answer is conditional and the conditions never travel with it.

Attempting to write the conditional version down properly. Corrections welcome and expected — I would like this to end up as a maintained page rather than a fifth thread.

a.batista, post #3: I would be cautious about generalising from the submitting a sample example above. It is a good example. It is one example. Go to post

Building on post #2 rather than restating it.

My understanding of submitting a sample is a few years old and may have been superseded. If it has been, I would genuinely like to know rather than keep repeating it.

Repeat testing: if you want to verify the same lot a second time, testing with a different service strengthens the conclusion. Testing with the same service verifies reproducibility but uses the same method.

Noting that the question and the thing people usually mean by it are different.

k.perrin, post #4: The opening post describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one. A record with four results over sixteen months is a thin record rather than a bad one, and the honest description says which. Go to post

Repeat determination on the same product line months apart is the measurement that speaks to consistency, and consistency is what most buyers actually want.

That is the honest state of it as of this week.

au.pereira, post #36: Adding a data point of agreement rather than a data point. Go to post

It does not extend to lots nobody has seen, it is not a recommendation, and it says nothing about anything other than what was measured.

cannula_notes, post #16: What I want from this submitting a sample thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it. Go to post

Post #55 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

It does not extend to lots nobody has seen, it is not a recommendation, and it says nothing about anything other than what was measured.

p.mbeki, post #24: On submitting a sample the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that. Go to post

Following, with nothing to contribute beyond having asked the same thing elsewhere.

h.falk, post #10: It does not extend to lots nobody has seen, it is not a recommendation, and it says nothing about anything other than what was measured. Go to post

On submitting a sample I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

On post #99 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Repeat testing: if you want to verify the same lot a second time, testing with a different service strengthens the conclusion. Testing with the same service verifies reproducibility but uses the same method.

That has been true for the cases I have seen and I have not seen many.
