The topic list is dense — is that deliberate? posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

Answering the question post #27 raises rather than the one it answers.

Staff answer. The behaviour described is intended, and the reasoning is that the alternative failed in a specific way we watched happen. Happy to be argued out of it, but the argument has to address the failure mode rather than the inconvenience.

The uncertainty is in the assumption, not in the calculation.

ka.batista, post #26: Topic list is worth one more sentence than it usually gets, and the sentence is the one about how the number was arrived at. Go to post

Seconding that. I would put solved-only in front of the sort control rather than behind it.

The short version is the first sentence; the rest is why.

a.krastev, post #16: The version of topic list that circulates here is a simplification of a simplification. It is not wrong, but it has lost the conditions under which it holds, and those conditions are where the interesting cases live. Go to post

The bit of topic list that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.

Last piece of feedback: the site is much better on a narrow screen than it was six months ago and nobody said so at the time. Recording it because only the failures usually get reported.

Topic list has a well-known answer and a correct answer, and the interesting work is establishing that they are the same. Nobody has done that here yet.

f.petrov, post #22: I read post #20 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite. Small methodological point on topic list: repeating a measurement is cheap and resolves most of what is being argued about here at no cost to anyone. Go to post

The documentation on topic list is better than this thread and I say that as someone who has posted in the thread.

Post #35 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Suggestion rather than complaint: the vendor pages carry a review date, and topics do not. A topic that has been read by a maintainer recently is a different thing from one nobody has looked at since 2024.

The general answer and the answer for your case may diverge here.

c.marchetti, post #10: Community norms: if you think a norm has drifted or is not being followed consistently, raising it here can prompt discussion and realignment. That has held every time I have looked, which is not the same as always. Go to post

My position on topic list is current rather than settled. I have revised it once already and I expect to again, so treat it accordingly.

b.frisk, post #2: The opening post and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction. Where I have landed on topic list, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it. Go to post

Worth stating the null on topic list before we explain it: the observation may be nothing. That possibility deserves a sentence and usually does not get one.

Post #40 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Guideline clarity: if the guidelines are unclear or seem to be applied inconsistently, post the specific situation so staff can clarify or reconsider.

This is the sort of thing that ought to be settled and apparently is not.

On topic list I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

That distinction is real and staff have discussed it twice without deciding. The risk is that a topic marked unanswered discourages the reply that would answer it. If anyone has seen it work elsewhere, say so — that is the missing evidence.

The honest answer on topic list is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter.

Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth.

Fairweather, post #25: Moderation decisions: if you disagree with a moderation decision, raising it here gives it visibility. Staff will reconsider if you make a substantive case. Go to post

I read the earlier replies on topic list twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

Adding the measurement that post #45 says would settle it.

Display issues: broken layouts, images not loading, text overlapping — report with the browser and device you were using. Display bugs are platform-specific.

I would put a moderate confidence on that and no more.

Post #46 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Checked the topic list claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

Feature request framed as feedback: the category list is long enough that a first-time reader cannot tell which four categories carry most of the traffic. A count next to each would fix that without changing anything structural.

Coming back to post #46, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Topic list is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

I would put moderate confidence on the mainstream reading of topic list and no more. That is not scepticism for its own sake; it is where the sourcing actually stops.

Post #49 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Not a bug, but worth saying: the moderation log is paginated at twenty-five entries and there is no way to filter it by rule. Being able to read every R6 action in sequence would be genuinely instructive.

Adding a source would improve this post and I do not have one to hand.

Answering the topic list question as asked, then the question I think is meant. As asked: yes, with the qualification below. As meant: it depends on how the first measurement was taken.

sterile_file, post #23: Taking post #22 at face value and following it one step further. Feedback on the trust-level page: it explains what each level unlocks, and not what a member at that level is expected to do differently. The second is what people actually want to know. The interesting part of this is the exception, and I do not understand the exception. Go to post

That would also be the fastest way for a new member to understand what R6 actually catches, which is narrower than people assume from the text.

I had written a reply contradicting post #53 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Worth separating topic list as a question about the compound from topic list as a question about the documentation. They get answered by different people and only one of them is answerable here.

Confirming post #53 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

On topic list: the maintained page in the documentation commons covers the general case with citations and a review date, which is more reliable than any reply here including this one.

Reporting a real defect: on a long topic the jump-to-post link scrolls to the right post but the highlight does not fire on the first load. Second load is fine. Reproducible on my end, twice.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of topic list yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

Two things can be true about topic list at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second.

The counter-argument is that a review date on a topic implies a maintenance promise nobody has made. A document carries one because somebody signed up to it.
