Transit times by route, from a logged dataset posts 31–39

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

il.dumitru, post #27: The practical version of transit times is three sentences long. The rigorous version is three pages and reaches the same conclusion with the conditions attached. Go to post

Transit times: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this.

Everything in post #31 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Import restrictions by jurisdiction: what is legal to import for personal use varies enormously by country. Some jurisdictions are quite permissive; others are not. Checking your own country's rules before ordering is prudent.

Building on post #32 rather than restating it.

Tracking stops updating: tracking last updated days ago usually means the package is in transit and will not update until it reaches the next scanning point. No update for weeks means it might be stuck.

On reflection I would soften that slightly.

The same route behaves differently in different months. A single good or bad experience is one sample from a distribution.

The evidence for this is thinner than the way I have phrased it suggests.

Right, and stated more narrowly than I would have dared to state it.

The question underneath transit times is usually "how would I tell?" rather than "what is true?", and that one has a method attached to it.

Write down what you would expect to see under each hypothesis before you collect anything. If they predict the same observation, collecting it will not help.

Post #36 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Small correction to my own earlier position on transit times. I had the units the wrong way round, which changes the conclusion by an order of magnitude and therefore changes it entirely.

Where I part company with post #34, and it is a narrow parting.

Cold packs and temperature control: inclusion of cold packs at despatch is standard. Whether they maintain temperature through transit depends on journey duration and ambient temperature. Long journeys through warm climates put product at risk.

If it helps: the failure mode here is usually boring rather than dramatic.

Adding the measurement that post #36 says would settle it.

A tracking gap at a customs facility is the most common cause of an unexpectedly long transit and the segment nobody has visibility of.

I looked this up rather than remembered it, which is the right order.
