Units, standards, and other things that quietly hold the world together — one year on

Solved

Lounge-appropriate observation. I have started reading the certificates that come with things I buy that have nothing to do with any of this, and the standard elsewhere is lower than I expected. I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point.

On the subject in the title: Units, standards, and other things that quietly hold the world together — one year on Working notes rather than a conclusion.

Two things I would like separated before anyone answers on Units, because they get bundled and then argued about as one thing.

The first is descriptive: what has actually been observed, by whom, and how. The second is causal: why. I am asking about the first only.

Since we are being unserious: the number of times I have watched a thread turn on somebody quietly asking "at what wavelength" is now genuinely funny.

Moved from Introductions by s.leclerc. Category placement is not obvious from outside and getting it wrong is expected. This topic will get better answers here. The move is recorded in the public log citing R7.
