Where I part company with post #118, and it is a narrow parting.

Two claims get bundled together under cold packs and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

Adding thanks rather than a view. I do not have a view worth the space.

What would change my mind on cold packs is a second dataset collected by someone with no stake in the first. Until then I hold it loosely and I would rather say so than pretend to more.

Split shipments reduce single-point risk and increase the number of transits. Which trade is right depends on what you are protecting against.

Post #122 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Cold packs has been discussed here with more heat than it deserves, mostly because two definitions have been in play the whole time.

At what point is a parcel genuinely a problem: if it was despatched weeks ago and there has been no update for days at customs, it might be held or lost. Days of delay at customs without update is ordinary; weeks without movement warrants inquiry.

It is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect and was not at the time.

Insurance and carrier liability: most parcel carriers limit liability. Understanding the limits before choosing a carrier matters if you are shipping expensive material.

That has been true for the cases I have seen and I have not seen many.

Cold packs would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.

Quietly grateful for the plain phrasing. Not every thread gets that.

Declared contents and declared value are the two fields most likely to cause a query, and accuracy in both is the only strategy that survives.

Whatever the answer on cold packs turns out to be, the method for getting there is the same: state the assumption, do the arithmetic in public, invite the correction.

Import restrictions by jurisdiction: what is legal to import for personal use varies enormously by country. Some jurisdictions are quite permissive; others are not. Checking your own country's rules before ordering is prudent.

Reporting the observation and leaving the explanation open deliberately.

Reading this cold packs thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.
