A preprint whose numbers changed substantially at publication posts 91–96

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Noted, and I have changed what I was going to do on the strength of it.

Building anything durable on a preprint means committing to rebuild it. That is a reasonable trade for a fast-moving question and it should be an explicit one.

For what it is worth, the same held on the two occasions I checked.

k.laurent, post #49: Coming back to post #45, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer. Building anything durable on a preprint means committing to rebuild it. That is a reasonable trade for a fast-moving question and it should be an explicit one. Go to post

Server repositories: medRxiv for medicine, bioRxiv for biology. Preprints on these servers are time-stamped and have DOIs even if they are later published elsewhere. Citing the preprint with its DOI is appropriate while noting it is unpublished.

Written quickly, so the reasoning may be tighter than the wording.

p.mbeki, post #70: Sample size and pre-registration are checkable in a preprint exactly as in a paper, and they carry the same weight. I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point. Go to post

Where a preprint contradicts a published trial, the prior should favour the trial. Where it extends one, the preprint can be genuinely useful.

Post #92 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Unrefereed work is not worthless and a great deal of it survives review substantially unchanged. That is the accurate framing and it is not a licence to treat it as final.

Coming back to post #94, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Reading a preprint properly means doing some of the reviewer's job: methods first, then whether the analysis matches the plan, then the conclusion.

Correct me on the arithmetic if it is wrong; I would rather know.

This topic was closed 180 days after the last reply. Closing is automatic for quiet topics so that a settled answer does not collect new questions underneath it. If you have a follow-up, open a new topic and link back to this one — that keeps both readable and gives your question its own title.
Moved from Study critique by t.vasquez. Category placement is not obvious from outside and getting it wrong is expected. This topic will get better answers here. The move is recorded in the public log citing R7.
