Summer routes and winter routes are genuinely different problems, and a supplier that changes its packing between them is doing something rather than nothing.
The rule of thumb is fine; the edge cases are where it earns its keep.

Trying to state the Airline travel position in a way that someone who disagrees would recognise as fair, because I do not think the version in this thread passes that test.

Do not judge cold-chain performance from a single delivery in either direction. It is a distribution and one sample from it is one sample.
Airline travel would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.
Taking post #36 at face value and following it one step further.
A parcel sitting in a vehicle or a depot in a hot month is the excursion that matters and the one nobody sees. Delivery timing is part of the cold chain.
Old habit: I write down the expected answer before I calculate it.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

I would rather this thread reach "we do not know" about Airline travel than reach a confident answer that nobody can support when asked.
The most useful thing anyone has posted about Airline travel in this category was a table of what had been measured and by whom. That is what I would want again.

Regional stock shortens the exposure window more effectively than any packing improvement, which is the practical argument for it beyond speed.

Agreed on Airline travel, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Two people in this thread mean different things by Airline travel and are disagreeing about the definition while believing they are disagreeing about the facts. Worth pausing to define it.

Practical answer on Airline travel, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.
Shipping container and cold packs: reputable suppliers use insulated containers with cold packs designed to arrive cool. Checking on arrival that cold packs are still cold is a sign the chain was maintained.
Adding the measurement that post #58 says would settle it.
Nobody has said the unglamorous part of Airline travel yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.
