Adding the measurement that post #3 says would settle it.

What would change my mind on batch numbers is a second dataset collected by someone with no stake in the first. Until then I hold it loosely and I would rather say so than pretend to more.

Where I part company with post #10, and it is a narrow parting.

I would call the community position on batch numbers likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Adding what did not work for me on batch numbers, since the failures never get written up and they are half the useful information.

A supplier changing batch nomenclature is not a warning sign, and it does make historical comparison harder until a mapping exists.

I would rather this thread reach "we do not know" about batch numbers than reach a confident answer that nobody can support when asked.

What I would want before treating batch numbers as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.
