Topic summary

Does a peptide degrade silently, with no visual change?

This is a generated summary. It shows the 9 most-liked posts from a topic of 80, in their original order, with the accepted answer included where one exists. It is a reading aid and it will miss nuance — the full topic is the record.

Marking my uncertainty on peptide explicitly. I am confident about the direction, much less confident about the size, and not confident at all that it generalises past the case in the first post.

The arithmetic in post #5 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

Visible particulate is a strong signal in the other direction: it is a reason to stop and ask rather than to filter and proceed.

I have changed my mind on this once already, so take it as current rather than settled.

Agreed on peptide, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

The claim about peptide upthread is stronger than its source supports. I have read the source. The source says "associated with" and the post says "causes".

Tamburello, post #9: Coming back to post #5, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer. Adding a reference point for peptide. Mine is a single case, collected without controls, and I am posting the method alongside it so it can be discounted appropriately. Go to post

Where I part company with post #43, and it is a narrow parting.

I have no financial interest in anything named in this thread and I want to say so before I comment on peptide, because it is the sort of subject where it matters.

Where I part company with post #61, and it is a narrow parting.

Adsorption to container surfaces removes peptide from solution without changing how the solution looks. In dilute preparations that loss can be a meaningful proportion, and it is invisible.

cohort_drift, post #13: Adding the measurement that post #10 says would settle it. Clarity is a weak test. A solution can lose a significant fraction of its active content to degradation or adsorption while remaining perfectly clear. Go to post

What I want from this peptide thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it.

Post #78 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Clarity is a weak test. A solution can lose a significant fraction of its active content to degradation or adsorption while remaining perfectly clear.
