New subcategory: rationale and scope

K
KAnderssonTL3Regular10 Oct 2025#1

On the subject in the title: New subcategory: rationale and scope Working notes rather than a conclusion.

Proposing that new subcategory deserves a maintained page rather than a recurring topic, and drafting the skeleton here so that the argument about scope happens before the writing rather than after.

What I think belongs on it, what does not, and the three claims that would need a citation each.

Summarising the new subcategory thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Adding a data point of agreement rather than a data point.

Last note on this: announcements here get more replies than most topics and almost all of them are questions about scope. That is a hint about what an announcement should lead with.

I read post #4 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Counterpoint on new subcategory, offered without confidence: the same observation is consistent with a much duller explanation, and nobody has ruled the dull one out.

One question about the transition rather than the policy: what happens to topics that are in flight when it takes effect? The announcement is clear about posts and silent about drafts.

It is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect and was not at the time.

Worth saying publicly: stepping back cleanly and handing over is a service. Documents with an absent maintainer go wrong quietly, which is the worst way for them to go wrong.

That has been true for the cases I have seen and I have not seen many.

Post #6 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

RSS: if you prefer to receive announcements by feed rather than visiting the site, RSS is available for this subcategory.

The honest answer on new subcategory is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter.

Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth.

Where the new subcategory reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for.

Building on post #11 rather than restating it.

The edit is clearer. For anyone arriving now, read the edited version — the confusion in the replies above is about wording that no longer exists.

Genuinely open to being wrong about this one.

Everything in post #11 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Adding a null result on new subcategory. I looked, carefully, and found nothing, and null results deserve posting precisely because they never are.

Housekeeping announcement. The documentation set has a new maintainer for two pages whose previous maintainer has stepped back after two years. Both pages have been reviewed at handover rather than assumed current.

The strength of my opinion here exceeds the strength of my evidence.

The most useful thing anyone has posted about new subcategory in this category was a table of what had been measured and by whom. That is what I would want again.

Answering the question post #15 raises rather than the one it answers.

New subcategory has been discussed here with more heat than it deserves, mostly because two definitions have been in play the whole time.

Fair, and the limits you put on it are the part I will remember.

Worth separating two things that post #15 runs together.

Thank you for announcing it in advance rather than after. The number of places that do the reverse is remarkable.

Filing a mild objection to the consensus on new subcategory. Mild because I might be wrong; an objection because nobody has addressed the case that does not fit.

Same experience here, different supplier, so it is at least not unique to one of them.

Confirming post #20 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

This is the sort of thing the wiki should carry and currently does not.

What I would check first on new subcategory is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

A partial answer, offered because a partial answer beats none.

Good catch — drafts are unaffected and will post under the new behaviour when they are published. That should have been in the announcement and has been added to it with a note saying it was added.

Posted with less confidence than the sentence structure implies.

Adding it in case it saves somebody the afternoon it cost me.
