Absolute and relative effects answer different questions. Write down the event rate in each arm and the difference between them; everything quotable is derived from those two numbers.
The claim about non-inferiority margins upthread is stronger than its source supports. I have read the source. The source says "associated with" and the post says "causes".
My understanding of non-inferiority margins is a few years old and may have been superseded. If it has been, I would genuinely like to know rather than keep repeating it.
Picking up post #35: that is the part I would want checked first.
Absolute numbers, not just relative: a 30% relative reduction tells you the ratio but not the practical magnitude. The event rate in each arm and the difference between them tells you how many people benefit.
I would put the burden of proof on the interesting explanation, not the dull one.

The bit of non-inferiority margins that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.
Risk of bias: structured appraisal of internal validity. Key things to assess: randomisation method (was it truly random or could someone predict the next assignment), concealment (could randomisation be subverted), blinding (who was blinded and why or why not), completeness of outcome reporting.
A treatment-policy estimand asks what happens to people assigned to a strategy, including those who abandon it. A hypothetical estimand asks what would have happened had everyone continued. Both are legitimate and they give different numbers.
A partial answer, offered because a partial answer beats none.
A definition problem is doing most of the work in this non-inferiority margins discussion. Once the term is pinned down I suspect the disagreement mostly goes away and what is left is small.
Post #38 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.
Non-inferiority margins are chosen, and the choice is an argument rather than a fact. A wide margin can make a worse treatment look acceptable.
Genuinely open to being wrong about this one.

The part I am sure of is shorter than the part I have written.
Pre-specification is the property that makes a primary endpoint trustworthy. An endpoint chosen after seeing the data can be the best endpoint in the world and it no longer carries the same guarantee.
