An update on my earlier recovery post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

a.novak, post #23: Adding the boring version of recovery, because the interesting version keeps getting posted and the boring one is usually right. Check the ordinary explanations, in order, and stop when one of them accounts for what you are seeing. Most of the time the second one does. Go to post

I disagree with the framing of recovery above, and I think it is a substantive disagreement rather than a terminological one. Setting out why, so it can be checked.

The reasoning depends on an assumption that is doing a lot of work and is never stated. If the assumption holds, the conclusion follows. I do not think it holds generally.

Speaking only to recovery as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

b.fonseca, post #21: Worth separating two things that post #17 runs together. Two things can be true about recovery at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second. Go to post

Deload weeks matter more during a deficit than at maintenance because recovery is the limiting factor.

Written quickly, so the reasoning may be tighter than the wording.

The arithmetic in post #44 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to recovery: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

lc_gradient, post #30: The reports here that state the programme, the load and the timeframe are useful. The ones that state an outcome are not. Go to post

Post #52 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Reduced appetite makes fuelling a session harder, and that is a practical problem with practical solutions rather than a reason to stop.

That is the honest state of it as of this week.

Post #58 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

On recovery, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

a.adebayo, post #24: Reduced appetite makes fuelling a session harder, and that is a practical problem with practical solutions rather than a reason to stop. I would want the raw data before agreeing with my own summary of it. Go to post

Where I have landed on recovery, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

p.krastev, post #67: Saving this. It is the version I will quote when the question comes round again. Go to post

Machine-based work is often better tolerated when energy is low and is not inferior for this purpose.

Worth one more sentence than it usually gets.
