Maintenance is the goal: preserving lean mass and strength during weight loss is the goal of resistance training in this context, not building new muscle. That goal is usually achievable with consistent, moderate training.

Maintenance phases are where most people report training going best, which is unsurprising and is worth saying to anybody struggling during loss.
Old habit: I write down the expected answer before I calculate it.

Small correction to my own earlier position on Programming during a large energy. I had the units the wrong way round, which changes the conclusion by an order of magnitude and therefore changes it entirely.
Programming while losing weight quickly: realistic expectations are crucial. Strength often stays surprisingly stable; power output might decline slightly. Expecting gains during an energy deficit sets yourself up for disappointment.
I read post #40 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.
Frequency: three sessions per week of full-body training is easier to maintain than higher frequencies on an energy deficit. Consistency beats intensity when recovery capacity is limited.
The interesting part of this is the exception, and I do not understand the exception.

Adaptation and plateau: if strength does not change for weeks, that is stability, not backsliding. Expecting continuous progress during weight loss is unrealistic.
It is one reading of the data and not the only reasonable one.

Check the ordinary explanations, in order, and stop when one of them accounts for what you are seeing. Most of the time the second one does.

Where training is new, the early gains are largely neural, which is why they can appear even during a deficit and do not indicate tissue change.
