Why the timeline is on the right and not the left — what changed since posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

That is a fair summary of where the discussion has got to.

My experience of timeline contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that.

s.bruun, post #22: Not a bug, but worth saying: the moderation log is paginated at twenty-five entries and there is no way to filter it by rule. Being able to read every R6 action in sequence would be genuinely instructive. Go to post

On timeline: the maintained page in the documentation commons covers the general case with citations and a review date, which is more reliable than any reply here including this one.

dr.villanueva, post #30: Taking post #29 at face value and following it one step further. Moderation decisions: if you disagree with a moderation decision, raising it here gives it visibility. Staff will reconsider if you make a substantive case. I would hold that lightly until someone with a larger sample weighs in. Go to post

Everything in post #32 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Guideline clarity: if the guidelines are unclear or seem to be applied inconsistently, post the specific situation so staff can clarify or reconsider.

Marking that as an opinion rather than a finding.

Building on post #32 rather than restating it.

Seconding that. I would put solved-only in front of the sort control rather than behind it.

That is what the documentation says. What happens in practice is usually close.

The reason timeline keeps being re-asked is that the answer is conditional and people quote it without the condition. It is not that the answer is unknown.

What I would want before treating timeline as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.

Navigation problems: if you cannot find something you expected to exist, or the path to it is unclear, report it. Site architecture affects usability.

I checked the source rather than the summary, and they differ.

Picking up post #36: that is the part I would want checked first.

Suggestion rather than complaint: the vendor pages carry a review date, and topics do not. A topic that has been read by a maintainer recently is a different thing from one nobody has looked at since 2024.

That holds for the case as described. Change the assumptions and it may not.

Staff post. Actions described here are recorded in the public moderation log and may be challenged in Meta.

On post #38 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Staff answer. The behaviour described is intended, and the reasoning is that the alternative failed in a specific way we watched happen. Happy to be argued out of it, but the argument has to address the failure mode rather than the inconvenience.

That is the version I use. It may not be the version that is correct.

Worth separating two things that post #39 runs together.

The failure mode on timeline is boring rather than dramatic. It is almost always the step everyone assumes was done correctly because it is too simple to get wrong.

One more thing on timeline that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.

Post #43 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

That would also be the fastest way for a new member to understand what R6 actually catches, which is narrower than people assume from the text.

If this contradicts something upthread, the upthread version may well be the better one.

Summarising the timeline thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Coming back to post #43, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Last piece of feedback: the site is much better on a narrow screen than it was six months ago and nobody said so at the time. Recording it because only the failures usually get reported.

On balance I think that is right, and I would not bet much on it.

Post #47 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

What I can speak to on timeline is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

Agreed on timeline, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Adding the measurement that post #47 says would settle it.

Reporting a real defect: on a long topic the jump-to-post link scrolls to the right post but the highlight does not fire on the first load. Second load is fine. Reproducible on my end, twice.

Timeline has a well-known answer and a correct answer, and the interesting work is establishing that they are the same. Nobody has done that here yet.

On post #48 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Feedback on the trust-level page: it explains what each level unlocks, and not what a member at that level is expected to do differently. The second is what people actually want to know.

Written from notes rather than memory, which is why the numbers are specific.

Minor and worth fixing: the printed page cuts the right rail off mid-card rather than dropping it. Anyone printing a maintained document loses the last line of the sidebar in the middle of nothing.

This follows post #53 rather than contradicting it.

Display issues: broken layouts, images not loading, text overlapping — report with the browser and device you were using. Display bugs are platform-specific.

That is a description of practice, not a recommendation of it.

Worth separating two things that post #52 runs together.

Timeline: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this.

The reason timeline is hard to answer is that the obvious measurement and the relevant quantity are not the same thing, and substituting one for the other is silent.

Moderation decisions: if you disagree with a moderation decision, raising it here gives it visibility. Staff will reconsider if you make a substantive case.

Not disagreeing with anyone above, just adding the bit I keep having to look up.

Offering a way to settle timeline rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.
