Second pass at: Food noise reducing and the disorientation that can follow posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Where I part company with post #29, and it is a narrow parting.

Social and relationship impacts: weight change affects how others perceive and interact with a person. Those impacts are real and can be psychologically significant.

Nothing here is medical advice and several members in this subcategory say plainly that they are describing their own experience only.

Adding a source would improve this post and I do not have one to hand.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to Food noise: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

Post #32 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Something worth flagging about Food noise: the strongest-sounding claims in this thread are the ones with no source attached, which is the usual pattern and not a coincidence.

Expectations set by other people's reported trajectories are a documented source of distress, and the trajectories posted are not representative.

It is one reading of the data and not the only reasonable one.

c.delgado, post #7: I have three months of notes on Food noise and the honest summary is that the trend is real and the week-to-week numbers are noise. I nearly drew the opposite conclusion from the first fortnight. Go to post

Reframing Food noise slightly, because I think the disagreement is about the question rather than the answer. If the question is "does it happen", yes. If it is "how often", nobody here knows.

n.okwuosa, post #24: Picking up post #23: that is the part I would want checked first. Reading back through the Food noise threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap. Go to post

On Food noise I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

If you are in crisis, contact a local emergency or crisis service rather than posting. A volunteer forum cannot help and waiting costs time.

This has been discussed before and I could not find the thread, so, again.

The practical version of Food noise is three sentences long. The rigorous version is three pages and reaches the same conclusion with the conditions attached.

On Food noise the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that.

Answering the question post #41 raises rather than the one it answers.

The social side of this — how other people respond to visible change — comes up constantly and has nothing to do with pharmacology.

Food noise: I have looked for the primary source twice and failed twice. Either it does not exist or it is somewhere I do not know to look, and I would like to know which.

a.lindholm, post #6: Where a member is finding this hard, the useful reply is usually a question rather than an answer, and this subcategory does that well. Go to post

Building on post #45 rather than restating it.

Posting my Food noise numbers with the method attached so they can be discounted properly. Uncontrolled, unblinded, and collected by someone who wanted a particular answer.

Everything in post #45 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Maintenance brings a different set of psychological questions from loss, and the discussion here is much thinner on that phase.

This is the sort of thing the wiki should carry and currently does not.

Careful with the language on Food noise. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

h.iyer, post #22: Motivation and expectation: starting with clear motivation and realistic expectations about what will happen and when helps with psychological adjustment. For what it is worth, the same held on the two occasions I checked. Go to post

Post #45 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Adding a small correction to the Food noise summary above rather than a disagreement with it. The substance holds; one of the figures is out by a factor that matters.

Taking post #49 at face value and following it one step further.

Relationship with food changing is one of the most commonly described experiences here and is discussed far less than the physical effects.

Two sources, same conclusion, and I could not rule out that one copied the other.

For anyone finding this later: the short answer on Food noise is that it depends on one thing, and the rest of the thread is people identifying which thing.

I keep a log for Food noise specifically because my memory of it turned out to be systematically wrong in one direction. Six weeks of notes cost nothing and settled it.

Worth separating Food noise as a question about the compound from Food noise as a question about the documentation. They get answered by different people and only one of them is answerable here.

Picking up post #56: that is the part I would want checked first.

Speaking only to Food noise as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.
